United Kingdom (VetTimes) New rental legislation raises welfare hopes
In Brief: While new rental legislation did not include specific animal welfare measures, welfare leaders from Dogs Trust and RSPCA are hopeful about its potential impact. Despite lacking direct animal welfare commitments in the King's Speech, the proposed Renters Rights Bill could allow tenants more freedom to keep pets, potentially reducing the number of pets surrendered due to housing restrictions. Both organizations are eager to work with the government to ensure the bill provides meaningful support for pet owners and animal welfare entities.
United States (News3LasVegas) Rescued French Bulldogs from illegal Las Vegas puppy mill up for adoption soon
In Brief: The Animal Foundation says the Frenchie puppies confiscated in a raid last month will soon be available for adoption. The legal hold has been released on the confiscated French Bulldogs and they will become available for adoption as they pass behavior and medical evaluations and are altered. If you are interested in adopting, closely monitor the foundation's adoption search page. Adoptions are done on a first come first serve basis.
United Kingdom (RSPCA) Kindness Index Report 2024
In Brief: The 2024 Animal Kindness Index is an annual UK-wide survey delving into our nation's attitudes towards animals. In a follow-on to our recent reporting of the index, we highlight the second topic covered in the report… the attitudes of UK citizens toward animals. Impressively, a significant majority of both children and adults, 85% and 69% respectively, describe themselves as animal lovers. This affection spans across different ages, with notably strong sentiments among the youngest and oldest generations. However, despite this professed love for animals, there is a concerning trend: younger adults, particularly those aged 16 to 24, seem less engaged with animal welfare issues compared to older groups.
The survey highlights a gender difference too, with women more likely to identify as animal lovers and to prioritize animal welfare than men. Across the board, citizens express a strong disapproval of using animals in ways that cause them harm, reflecting a growing societal shift toward better animal treatment. Yet, the data suggests a disconnect between these attitudes and the actual prioritization of animal welfare, which has slipped from being among the top three concerns for UK citizens.
This segment of the report paints a complex picture of a nation that deeply cares about animals, yet struggles with translating this care into consistent action and prioritization amidst other pressing social and environmental issues.
United States (American Kennel Club) CDC’s Dog Import Rule: Share Your Concerns with CDC and Congress
In Brief: The CDC is set to implement new dog import rules on August 1, 2024, introducing stricter requirements and restrictions for dogs entering the U.S. The American Kennel Club (AKC) supports the CDC's goal to prevent health risks posed by the import of unhealthy dogs with fraudulent documentation. However, AKC is concerned about the rule banning all dogs under six months, which could affect low-risk, personally-owned dogs, especially those crossing the U.S.-Canadian border for events or veterinary care.
AKC encourages dog owners to express their concerns to the CDC and Congress, asking for a delay in the rule's implementation to consider exceptions for low-risk, personally-owned dogs. They suggest sharing personal stories and the potential negative impacts of the rule on responsible dog enthusiasts. AKC has also provided resources for further understanding and encourages sharing any responses with their Government Relations team to aid in advocacy efforts.
